The aims of the group are to promote and train members of the public to achieve higher driving standards. We hold monthly meetings, often with a guest speaker. This website contains information about the training program and how to apply online. What is Advanced Driving about?
Advanced Driving is about planning
Advanced Driving is based around a the system of car control practised by Police Class 1 drivers. This breaks down every situation and manoeuvre into five sections:
Information, Position, Speed, Gear and Acceleration.
What will I do?
Practise for the test is given by volunteers called observers.
You will use your own car, hence we do not charge for practice runs.
Tests are only applied for once a senior observer has conducted a ‘mock’ test.
The real test lasts about an hour and is a chance to show off your skills.
Most candidates soon stop feeling nervous.
Why should I be an Advanced Motorist?
Advanced Drivers are 70% less likely to be involved in a traffic accident
Advanced drivers enjoy lower insurance costs (through discounts and reduced claims)
Your car will use less fuel, tyres last longer and break down less
Who can be an Advanced Motorist?
Anybody who has held a driving license for three months or more with six points or less.
Is the Advanced Test within my reach?
Most people are able to take the test after about eight drives with our Observers. Our first time pass rate is around 90%.
Skill for Life
The Skill For Life course is delivered by volunteers called 'Observers'.
An Observer is someone who has already passed the IAM Advanced Test and subsequently gone on to do further training within the local IAM Group. This additional Training ensures they can pass on the information and experiences they have gained to other people wanting to prepare for the IAM Advanced Test themselves.
The SfL package includes everything you require to pass the Advanced Driving Test; a copy of "How to be an Advanced Driver", membership of the Institute for a year once you pass, membership of your local group for a year, and the test fee.
The Skill For Life package costs £139. That's less than two tanks of fuel. You'll probably save the fee several times over in fuel savings as a result of a smoother driving style!
